Who is Priyamani?

Priya Vasudev Mani Iyer, popularly known as Priyamani, is a multi-lingual Indian actress and model born on 4 June 1984 in Bengaluru, Karnataka. From a Tamil Palakkad Iyer family, her father Vasudev Mani Iyer is a plantation owner, and her mother Lathamani Iyer, a national-level badminton player turned bank manager. She is related to the celebrated Carnatic vocalist Kamala Kailas, singer Malgudi Shubha, and cousin to Bollywood star Vidya Balan.

Priyamani’s early exposure to performing arts began with modeling for silk brands during school. Tamil director Bharathiraja introduced her to cinema in the 12th grade. Her debut in Kangalal Kaithu Sei (2004) wasn’t a commercial success, but her career soared with the critically acclaimed Tamil film Paruthiveeran (2007), winning the National Film Award for Best Actress. She followed up with award-winning performances in Malayalam’s Thirakkatha (2008) and Kannada’s Chaarulatha (2012), earning Filmfare honors.

Over the years, Priyamani has built an extensive portfolio across Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi cinema, notable works including Yamadonga, Malaikottai, and Jawan (2023). She has also made her mark on streaming platforms with acclaimed series like The Family Man and the upcoming Good Wife (premiering 4 July 2025).

Known for her grounded personality and outspoken stance on body positivity, Priyamani has publicly confronted trolls accusing her of being “old” or “aunty,” replying with confidence and grace. She also acknowledged the persistent online hate received due to her Hindu-Muslim marriage, including worrying comments about her hypothetical children being labeled terrorists.
