Born in Mumbai to a Punjabi Hindu family—her father Amarjeet Singh was a naval officer, and her mother Deepika Singh is a homemaker—Poonam has one younger sister named Daya.
Her journey began on the runway after being crowned Miss Pune (2005), which paved the way for her entry into modeling and eventual discovery at a ramp show . Shortly after, she debuted in the 2005 Telugu film Modati Cinema, even before beginning college . Poonam completed her education in English Literature at Symbiosis International University, Pune.
Her versatility shone through notable performances in Boss (2006) opposite Nagarjuna, a cameo in Parugu (2008), and her Tamil debut in Seval (2008) .
