Raised Catholic, she is the daughter of Susan (a former actress and English teacher) and Harry Hyra (a mathematics teacher), and has siblings—two sisters, Dana and Annie, and a brother, musician Andrew Hyra . After starting her acting career early, Meg left college to join As the World Turns in the early 1980s before rising to fame in Top Gun (1986) and later solidifying her rom-com status with films like When Harry Met Sally… (1989), Sleepless in Seattle (1993), and You’ve Got Mail (1998) .
