Who is Mariann Aalda?
Mariann Aalda (born May 7, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois) is an American actress, comedian, and performance artist best known for pioneering roles and advocacy in the positive aging movement. Her career began in theater and comedy in New York City before moving into film and television, where she made history as DiDi Bannister on ABC’s daytime soap The Edge of Night from 1981 to 1984—one of the first African-American professional heroines in daytime TV.
She studied at Southern Illinois University and trained at the Negro Ensemble Company in New York, where contemporaries included Laurence Fishburne and Robert Townsend. Before soap opera stardom, she was a writer-performer with Off‑Center Theatre and toured with an improv troupe led by Charlie Adler.
Aalda later moved to Los Angeles, appearing in recurring and guest roles on TV shows such as 1st & Ten, Designing Women, The Royal Family, Sunset Beach, Guiding Light, and The Blacklist. She also had small but memorable roles in films like Beaches, Pretty Woman, Class Act, and Nobody’s Perfect.
In recent years, Mariann has become a global voice against ageism. She delivered a TEDx talk titled “Ageism Is a Bully…Stand Up to It!”, and was honored as an “Age Disruptor” by AARP for her work changing narratives around aging—especially for women of color . She created and tours a one-woman comedy show, Getting Old Is a Bitch…But I’m Gonna Wrestle That Bitch to the Ground!, which broke box office records at the 2019 National Black Theatre Festival in North Carolina.
Through her performance art and podcast appearances, she encourages women to embrace aging, reject shame, and celebrate their experiences with humor and dignity.
