Who is Maria Bello?
Maria Bello (full name: Maria Elena Bello), born April 18, 1967, in Norristown, Pennsylvania, is a celebrated American actress, writer, producer, and advocate. Raised in a working-class Catholic household—with her father Joe Bello, a contractor, and her mother Kathy Bello, a nurse and teacher—Maria demonstrated early curiosity and artistic drive.
After earning a degree in political science from Villanova University, she began acting in the early 1990s, appearing in TV series such as The Commish (1991) and ER (1997–1998), where she played Dr. Anna Del Amico. Her breakthrough in film arrived with Permanent Midnight (1998), followed by standout roles in Coyote Ugly (2000), The Cooler (2003), A History of Violence (2005), Thank You for Smoking (2005), and Prisoners (2013).
On television, she portrayed Special Agent Jack Sloane on NCIS (2017–2021) and received critical acclaim for her performance in the miniseries Beef (2023), earning a Critics’ Choice Award. Beyond acting, Bello has produced films like The Woman King (2022) and authored the memoir Whatever…Love is Love (2015), exploring identity and modern relationships.
Maria is also known for her activism: she co-founded WE ADVANCE, a nonprofit supporting Haitian women’s health and empowerment, and serves on the board of the Darfur Women Action Group.
