Who is Manoj Kumar?

Manoj Kumar, born as Harikrishan Giri Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Abbottabad, British India (now in Pakistan), remains a towering figure in the history of Indian cinema. Known for his unwavering dedication to films with a patriotic spirit, he shaped an entire era of Bollywood storytelling. His early life was deeply impacted by the Partition of India in 1947, which forced his family to migrate to Delhi when he was just 10 years old. This phase of displacement and nation-building would later influence the themes of nationalism and pride in many of his cinematic works.

Inspired by legendary actor Dilip Kumar’s performance in the movie Shabnam, he adopted the screen name “Manoj Kumar,” marking the beginning of an extraordinary journey in Hindi films. He made his acting debut in 1957 with the film Fashion. Although his initial roles garnered moderate attention, it was his performance in Shaheed (1965), portraying freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, that brought him critical and commercial acclaim.

His legacy was cemented with powerful and patriotic films such as Upkar (1967), Purab Aur Paschim (1970), and Kranti (1981). These films did more than entertain—they inspired. His portrayal of the ideal Indian, rooted in tradition and love for the country, earned him the affectionate nickname “Bharat Kumar.” Not only did he act, but he also directed and wrote many of his projects, often blurring the lines between personal belief and on-screen expression.

In recognition of his immense contributions to Indian cinema, Manoj Kumar was honored with the Padma Shri in 1992 and the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015. He passed away on April 4, 2025, at the age of 87, leaving behind a rich cinematic legacy that continues to inspire generations of filmmakers and actors.
