Who is Laura Linney?

Laura Leggett Linney (born February 5, 1964) is a highly respected American actress renowned for her work across film, television, and stage. Raised in Manhattan, New York, Laura is the only child of Romulus Linney—a celebrated playwright and professor—and Miriam Anderson “Ann” Perse, a nurse at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center . She spent her childhood summers with her father in New Hampshire, where she discovered her passion for acting at age 11 through local theater involvement.

Linney studied at Northfield Mount Hermon School, began her college career at Northwestern, and completed her B.A. in theater at Brown University in 1986. She further refined her craft at Juilliard (Group 19), where she later returned in 2009 to give the commencement address and receive an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree.

Her career launched with a minor role in Lorenzo’s Oil (1992), followed by breakthrough performances in Tales of the City (1993) and acclaimed films like You Can Count on Me (2000), Kinsey (2004), and The Savages (2007), each earning her Academy Award nominations . On television, she won four Primetime Emmy Awards for roles in Wild Iris, Frasier, John Adams, and The Big C, and portrayed Wendy Byrde in Netflix’s Ozark (2017–2022) . Her stage career is equally prestigious, earning Tony Award nominations for Broadway productions including The Crucible, Time Stands Still, and My Name Is Lucy Barton.

Linney’s accomplishments have also been recognized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, unveiled in July 2022—an honor she described as “beyond my wildest dreams.
