Who is Edie Adams?

Edie Adams (born Edith Elizabeth Enke; April 16, 1927 – October 15, 2008) was an American comedian, actress, singer, and businesswoman known for her comedic partnership with her husband Ernie Kovacs, her sultry Muriel cigar commercials, and her performances on Broadway and in Hollywood films.

Raised in Kingston, Pennsylvania, with musical training from her mother and formal education at Juilliard (vocal degree), Columbia University, and the Actors Studio, Adams began her career on television variety shows like Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts and The Bonnie Maid’s Versatile Varieties before joining The Ernie Kovacs Show in 1951 . Her Broadway success included roles in Wonderful Town (1953) and a Tony Award in 1957 as Daisy Mae in Li’l Abner. That same year, she earned an Emmy nomination for her work on The Ernie Kovacs Show.

In the early 1960s, Adams transitioned to film with roles in The Apartment (1960), Lover Come Back (1961), It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963), Love with the Proper Stranger (1963), and Under the Yum Yum Tree (1963) . She cultivated a glamorous image as a platinum blonde reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe and became widely recognized in Muriel cigar advertisements, which she fronted for over two decades.

Following Kovacs’s sudden death in a 1962 car accident, Adams took over his estate, paid off his substantial tax debts, and fought a high-profile custody battle for his children from a previous marriage . She briefly hosted her own musical-comedy variety series Here’s Edie in 1963–64. In later decades, she appeared on television shows such as The Red Skelton Hour, Designing Women, Murder, She Wrote, and made occasional film and theater appearances into the early 1990s.

Adams also founded two beauty-oriented businesses: Edie Adams Cosmetics and Edie Adams Cut ’n’ Curl salons. She was a tireless advocate for preserving Kovacs’s television archive, purchasing and preserving kinescopes and videotapes that would otherwise have been lost—efforts later guiding her advocacy before the Library of Congress.
