Who is Beverly Aadland?

Beverly Elaine Aadland (September 16, 1942 – January 5, 2010) was an American film actress who gained fame in the 1950s. Born in the Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles, she began appearing in films as a young child, making an uncredited appearance in Death of a Salesman (1951) when she was about nine years old . She later appeared as a nurse in the Thanksgiving show sequence of South Pacific (1958), and had minor roles in Too Much, Too Soon and The Roots of Heaven, as well as a featured part in Cuban Rebel Girls (1959).

She is most historically notable for her highly publicized relationship with swashbuckling actor Errol Flynn, which reportedly began when she was 15 and he was in his late 40s. Flynn died of a heart attack in her presence in Vancouver on October 14, 1959, and she was 17 at the time . In 1961, her mother Florence Aadland published the memoir The Big Love, claiming Flynn had an affair with her daughter from age 15—though some later sources suggest Flynn may have believed Aadland was older . Beverly herself, in interviews like a 1988 feature in People magazine, confirmed the relationship began in her teens.

After Flynn’s death, Aadland’s life took turbulent turns. In 1960, her 20-year‑old boyfriend William Stanciu entered her apartment and was fatally shot in a struggle; she was acquitted on self-defense grounds but made a ward of the court at 17 . Later she worked as a singer, dancer, and cocktail waitress. She married three times: first to Maurice Jose de Leon (1961–1964), then Joseph E. McDonald (1967–1969), and finally to Ronald Fisher in 1969; they remained together until her death and had one daughter.

Although her acting career lasted only from about 1951 to 1959, she remains a notorious figure in Hollywood history due to the scandal surrounding her youth and relationship with Flynn. Her story was dramatized in the film The Last of Robin Hood (2013), in which Dakota Fanning portrayed Aadland, and the memoir The Big Love was adapted into a one-woman Broadway show starring Tracey Ullman as her mother Florence . Beverly Aadland passed away on January 5, 2010, in Lancaster, California, from complications of diabetes and congestive heart failure at age 67.
