Who is Sonali Bendre?
Sonali Bendre Behl, born 1 January 1975 in Mumbai, is a celebrated Indian actress, model, TV judge, and author. She first stepped into the limelight as a model, winning the Filmfare “Lux New Face of the Year” debut award in 1994 for her first film Aag alongside Govinda . Throughout the 1990s, she starred in major Bollywood hits such as Bombay (1995), Diljale (1996), Sarfarosh (1999), Hum Saath Saath Hain (1999), and Duplicate (1998), earning accolades for both her acting and dance performances.
Sonal also showed her linguistic versatility by acting in Tamil (Kadhalar Dhinam 1999), Telugu (Murari 2001), Kannada (Preethse 2000), and Marathi (Anahat 2003) films . Her role in Anahat earned her the Screen Award for Best Actress (Marathi) in 2004.
After taking a career hiatus, she returned with TV and digital projects, judging reality shows and starring in the ZEE5 series The Broken News (2022–2024), for which she received a Filmfare OTT nomination . Off-screen, Sonali is an advocate for cancer survivors, having shared her own successful battle against stage-four metastatic cancer in 2018, becoming cancer-free in 2021.
An author of The Modern Gurukul (2015), she passionately promotes parenting, literacy, and children’s education. In 2024, she launched the animal-care podcast The Happy Pawdcast and continues philanthropic efforts geared toward education and health.
